Time to Get Holy Basil

With the holy season upon us, it’s fittingly appropriate to talk about a well revered and researched Ayurvedic herb, Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum).

In numerous ancient medicinal practices including Ayurveda, Greek, Roman, Siddha and Unani, basil has been used to treat a wide range of health conditions including but not limited to heart disease, asthma, bronchitis, genitourinary dysfunction, fungal disorders, stomach disorders, vomiting, and even hiccups.

Current research, both in animals and humans, supports the use of basil in treating inflammation, digestive disorders, diabetes, headaches, heart diseases and infection1-4. It also protected against mercury toxicity in mice and offered chemoprotection against chemically induced fibrosarcoma in an animal model5.

Holy basil is considered an adaptogenic herb, meaning that it provides protection from the effects of stress and the onset of illness. Holy basil is believed to strengthen the immune system. In Ayurveda, basil is said to have a warming quality that is useful for vata and kapha disorders. In those with a more pitta constitution, basil is said to be useful for reducing fever.

In India, basil is still worshipped. The stems of the plant are actually carved into a necklace said to provide the wearer with spiritual shelter and sustenance.
