Ode to Oatmeal

Most of us believe that eating breakfast is one of the best things you can do for yourself.  Studies have confirmed that breakfast eaters benefit their health by eating a more nutritionally complete diet, that is, a diet higher in nutrients, vitamins and minerals compared to non-breakfast eaters. Breakfast eaters enjoy better concentration and performance in the classroom and at work; they have superior strength and endurance and they have lower cholesterol levels compared to non-breakfast eaters.

New studies show that when it comes to breakfast, you can’t beat oatmeal. Oats have been shown to help reduce cholesterol, lower the risk of high blood pressure, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. One of the impressive qualities of oats is that eating them appears to help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol without reducing HDL cholesterol (good) levels.

Eating oatmeal for breakfast can help prevent against weight gain as well as premature hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis). Oatmeal is high in fiber and low in fat, has protein, iron and no cholesterol.

Oatmeal is very easy and quick to prepare.  Irish oats, or steel-cut oats, require a little bit more time on the stove, about 30 minutes, but are indeed worth the wait.  Steel-cut oats have a nutty, chewy flavor and like regular oatmeal, they taste great with a little cinnamon, a drop of maple syrup and a tiny bit of cream. Add a few berries and you’ve got yourself a delicious and very satisfying way to start your day.
