March/April 2010

With an incredibly busy start to the year, I am grateful for the return of springtime. It is a perfect time to do a self check-in and see how I am really doing. I know that for me, personally, with all of the traveling I do it is sometimes difficult for me to stop and take inventory of my life. It is as if I don’t want to lose any momentum. I used to have a phrase for this. I called it “too tired to keep running, too scared to stop.” Well, it is time for me to take ownership of that phrase and slow down. For me that means connecting with my family, meditating, doing yoga, and being mindful of not over-committing to things that take away from these things I hold so dear.

I would encourage everyone else to do the same. Check in with yourself. Give yourself the opportunity to express this practice of self love can be a gateway to birthing your highest gifts and talents and displaying them for the world to marvel at and be inspired by. When it comes to food, gift yourself with what is truly nourishing and sustaining, whole, unprocessed, nutrient-dense and natural cuisine. Make mealtime a ritual of grace and empowerment – conscious cuisine.

Spring is the time to grow and stretch yourself. It is never ever too late to start or too late to change.

Best and blessings,

James

March and April always feel like renewal months to me. With Easter and Passover holidays and the symbolism of the egg in both celebrations, I can’t help but think about the cycle of life and all the amazing possibilities and opportunities that abound. In honor of the egg, our Exceptional Eggs article features some tasty recipes where eggs are highlighted. Along with this idea of renewal I also like to take a few weeks to clean up my diet and go through a gentle cleansing process every Spring. If this is of interest to you too I encourage you to look at Lisa Turner’s article on Healthy Spring Detox. She’s not talking about starving yourself or fasting on water alone, but she is giving you great tips on how to get started with a simple cleanse. After you complete your cleanse and are considering diving back into your sweet tooth, I recommend you take a look at our feature on natural sweeteners. Remember, all sweeteners are not created equal. We are also talking about healthy ways to “green” our kitchens with great energy-saving (and money-saving) tips.

I want to take a moment to appreciate Lisa, our managing editor, Susan, our publisher and Abbie in Advertising and our other Optimum Wellness team members who completed the half-marathon in Arizona this past weekend. Oh what fun we had and everyone did fabulously. I am now diving back into tennis, which I temporarily put on hold to finish our cookbook, Colorado Fit Kitchen, which is available, by the way, at www.optimumwellness.com.

Wishing you and your loved ones the very best of health and happiness,

Debra
