Coffee Perks
It seems the jury is back in when it comes to discussing whether or not coffee is good for our health. Do the benefits outweigh the risks? A recent study would suggest, that yes, coffee is actually good for most of us. Researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm questioned over 60,000 women regarding their coffee intakes. The women were put in one of two groups. One group included women who drank two or more cups of coffee everyday and the other group included women who drank little to no coffee.
After a 17- year follow up, a total of 677 of the over 60,000 women questioned, developed endometrial cancer. Women in the coffee consuming group were less likely to develop cancer compared to women who didn’t drink coffee. They found that for each additional cup of coffee consumed daily, there was a 10% decrease in risk for endometrial cancer. Overweight women received the most protection from drinking coffee – decreasing their risk for endometrial cancer by 12% with each additional cup of coffee.
In other coffee news, researchers from Harvard University found that regular coffee drinkers may decrease their risk for type 2 diabetes. Researchers calculated that drinking one to three cups of caffeinated coffee daily can reduce diabetes risk by single digits. And frighteningly enough, drinking six cups or more each day decreased men’s risk for type 2 diabetes by 54% and women’s by 30% over non-coffee drinkers.
More studies indicate that regular coffee drinkers are less likely to develop Parkinson’s disease, reduce their risk for liver cirrhosis, colon cancer, and gallstones.
Now we already know that too much caffeine can interfere with our sleep and may make us jittery and leave us feeling a bit anxious. So definitely talk with your doctor before increasing your intake of coffee and keep your eyes and ears poised for more research to come in!
