Happy Thanksgiving! Gratitude is key to being happy and healthy. Look for daily miracles—the sun rising and setting, your heart beating, a smile from a friend or stranger, the choice to share your love and light unconditionally. Being grateful and seeing the world with appreciative eyes even in the midst of challenges requires a courageous, warrior-like heart. Choosing to show up and shine is the mark of a wellness warrior. No one did that better than my friend and high school classmate Jim MacLaren, recipient of the 2005 Arthur Ashe Award for Courage. In 1985, Jim lost his left leg below the knee in a near-fatal motorcycle accident. He recovered and went on to fi nish the Kona Ironman in under 11 hours. In 1993, on a closed triathlon course in California, Jim was hit by a van while on the bike portion of the race, rendering him a paraplegic. Friends of Jim came together to raise funds for a van Jim could drive with his hands and started the Challenged Athletes Foundation, which supports disabled athletes around the world. Jim embodied the heart and spirit of a true wellness warrior; he passed away August 30, and I want to dedicate this issue of Optimum Wellness to him. May his courageous spirit live on through all of us.
