There’s no better example of wellness personified than Jack LaLanne. I would like to dedicate this issue of our magazine to Jack, my lifelong mentor and hero, who passed away on January 23 at the age of 96. What a beautiful teacher he was and what a difference he made on the planet.
Choosing, as Jack did, to be proactive about your well-being can be transformational. A recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine described how four lifestyle factors—regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, eating healthy foods, and never smoking—cuts your risk of developing most common chronic diseases by 80 percent. Although it sounds simple, many of us find it challenging to keep up these four healing habits.
The best way is to begin by focusing on one of them. If you’re a smoker, make quitting your priority, and try daily meditation as a proactive, healthy way to manage stress. If you’re already smoke-free, move on to eating healthy foods or managing your weight. For example, a Mediterranean-style diet, rich in whole grains, fi sh, nuts, olive oil, fruits, and vegetables, can feed your body and inspire a healthier lifestyle.
With summer nearly upon us, there’s no better time to start moving your body and your mind in a more positive direction. Aim high and live like you mean it!
