A Cure for the Blues

For the past month we have been loving the organic blueberries at the Farmer’s Market. Clearly one vendor’s berries stand above the rest and we make sure to visit his booth to pick up 3 boxes of blueberries before he sells out.

Blueberries are abundant during the summer months and they can hardly be beat in terms of nutritional value and taste! Blueberries contain antioxidants and phytochemicals that may benefit your health in a big way. The powerful blue color of blueberries stems from a group of phytochemicals called anthocyanins.  The anthocyanins are responsible for much of the antioxidant activity in blueberries. These powerful phytochemicals may help prevent cancer and can protect against cell damage that eventually accelerates aging and increased susceptibility to disease.

Blueberries also benefit the heart with soluble fiber, vitamin E, and flavonoids that may help make blood platelets less sticky (making it less likely for dangerous clots to form).

One animal study performed at Tufts University found that rats supplemented with an extract of blueberry had greater mental ability and memory compared to rats who were not given the extract.

Blueberries may also offer some antibacterial activity and may prevent infections in the urinary tract.

Be forewarned: blueberries may have a laxative effect in some people, so it’s always good to start slow.  One half cup to 1 cup of blueberries will provide plenty of heart- and brain-healthy phytonutrients. Wash your blueberries well and buy organic whenever possible. The white, chalky looking substance is usually “bloom,” which is a sign that the berries are fresh. The berries should not be sticking together in the carton, but should move around freely when you shake the container.

Dried blueberries also make a good snack. They can be eaten like raisins or used in baking or salads.  But while blueberries are fresh, you really can’t beat the fresh berry. If you live near a “you-pick” farm, freezing berries in a plastic freezer bag or container will help them stay fresh for months.
