How to Deal with Health-Obsessed Parents
As told by Elli, age 9:
My parents are obsessed with eating well and exercising everyday. That makes me feel tired sometimes and what 9 year-old kid wants to feel tired all the time, like I sometimes do? It’s taken me a while, but I’ve finally figured out some of the best ways to deal with them and I thought I’d pass this advice on to others with the same kind of parents.
First you have to impress them with your eating skills. Try and eat everything they eat, which of course, is healthy. This may include vegetables, fruits, gross vegetables, protein and fiber. When you eat this way you can end up with more privileges or prizes such as money, trips, the big prize being dessert.
Next comes exercise. It’s a good idea to do this everyday or your parents will think you’re lazy and keep hassling you to do something. Try fitting it in with them even though sometimes they can be weird. In that case do something on your own like join a sports team like soccer, baseball, football, volleyball or swimming. You’ll get exercise and make new friends at the same time. Then when you ask if you can watch tv, you can tell them how much exercise you already got in that day.
Finally, we do something in our family that is sometimes annoying because it can sometimes be awkward but somehow I think it all fits in and helps make my parents happy. We call it appreciations and we do them around the dinner table, usually. Everyone takes a turn saying at least one thing that they appreciate about each family member. Sometimes we even write everything down. Even though this isn’t really about being healthy or obsessed, it’s good for our health as a family.
